Debate #2 on 10/5 - Closing Statement by Phil Maymin (transcription)

I will use part of my closing statement to say what I wanted to say which is that I do not agree with my Democratic opponent. If we serve on those committees, our service will come in completely different ways. She will vote to increase spending on virtually anything she can get her hands on. I will vote to eliminate virtually anything I can to return your money to you.

As you may know from hearing me today, I don't believe that government is the solution to problems. I believe it is typically the problem itself. America is a free country, okay, let's not get carried away. But is it less free or more free than it's been before?

And I think a lot of what I say, especially if this is the first time you're hearing it, may scare you a little. It sounds almost extreme or radical. But really what I'm talking about is, hey, we have a Constitution. Let's follow it. That's not extreme. That's patriotic. It's how our country was founded.

The question before you isn't between left and right. It's between up and down. Between up towards freedom. Left and right is a myth that's been propagated to you, that the political parties have split your liberties. Nowhere in the Constitution does it say you have the right to life, economic liberty, and social liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

You have the right to liberty. Period. Democrats have tried to pretend that they're the party that will give you social liberty. They've failed, always. The Republicans have tried to pretend that they're the party that gives you economic liberty. They've failed, always.

Libertarians are the party that give you both. Economic and social liberty. It's your life. It's your right to live it as you choose.

Don't be scared by the things I say. The question here is what direction do we go to, not the final destination. America used to be a shining beacon of light. And it was the brightest light in the sky. It called people to it. For freedom.

It's diminished. It's still the brightest out there but only because every other country is barely holding up a candle. Let's shine the light back again.

When you turn up the light, what happens? At first you have to cover your eyes. Oh, well, that's really bright. But then you get used to it and you want more freedom. You'll see how in your lives the free market and freedom and your liberties expand.
