Libertarian against big taxes, tiny toilets

Hedge-fund manager Phil Maymin is running as a Libertarian against U.S. Rep. Chris Shays, R-4th District, promising to tighten U.S. borders and do away with limits on how much water toilets can use with each flush.

According to his campaign Web site, Maymin, 31, founder of Greenwich-based Maymin Capital Management LLC, opposes amnesty for illegal immigrants and supports cuts in government waste. He "will always vote to cut any and all taxes," the Web site says.

Shays, 60, a 19-year veteran of the U.S. House of Representatives, faces a tough challenge from Democrat Diane Farrell. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the race as one of the 17 closest in the country.

"I am appealing to the many registered voters who would otherwise choose to stay home," Maymin said in an e-mail. "I think I will draw votes from all the disaffected voters who are searching for new directions and who feel there is not much of a difference between Farrell and Shays, both of whom are for a big government solution to any problem."

Maymin, a Russian immigrant who graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., and Harvard University, began his career in the hedge fund industry at Long Term Capital Management, according to his campaign Web site. LTCM lost billions of dollars following the 1998 Russian debt default and was liquidated.

"Christopher looks forward to debating all of his opponents this fall," Michael Sohn, Shays' campaign manager, said.

in a statement.
