REGION After a rush to finish legislative business in Washington, D.C. over the weekend, U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays will launch into a series of 11 debates with Democratic challenger Diane Farrell next week.
For six months, Farrell has challenged Shays, R-4, to a debate on the Iraq war. She will get her chance Wednesday afternoon at the Stamford Marriott, in a debate sponsored by the Business Council of Southwestern Connecticut.
The latter remark was a nod to Shays' announcement last month he will draft a timeline for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq, based on projections for training Iraqi soldiers. Shays has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Iraq war, and has chafed at Farrell's labeling of his timetable as an election-year calculation.
Shays' campaign said the congressman is excited to take on his opponent.
"Chris is looking forward to showing the people of the district his record of independence and showing that there's a contrast between these two candidates," said Michael Sohn, Shays' campaign manager.
Shays and Farrell have agreed that Iraq will likely be the central issue in the debates, but hope to highlight other subjects, as well, including homeland security, education, the environment and the economy.
Wednesday's debate will be preceded by a luncheon for paying guests, but 200 free seats will be provided for the public. Panelists will include Mark Davis, political reporter for WTNH Channel 8 News and Erik Campano, afternoon news anchor at WSTC/WNLK radio.
The debate will also include libertarian candidate Phil Maymin.
Having observed the candidates debate in 2004, business council vice president Joe McGee said each made a strong showing. He expects even more focus on the council's debate this year.
Those wishing to attend the Oct. 4 debate can contact the Business Council of Southwestern Connecticut at (203) 359-3220. A debate has been scheduled in Wilton for Oct. 17, sponsored by the League of Women Voters.
