SlowFlyingEagle Shays steals Iraq deadline from Maymin |
Fri Sep 01, 2006 8:42 pm |
After being caught red-handed with almost identical reasoning from Maymin for the deadline (he calls it "timetable", see Phil's public release "Shays borrows ...") he is now changing the tune. August 31, on Larry Jing, he said that since January the Iraqi government has done nothing, and that is the reason for his [Shays] flip-flop. But in fact, he said himself several times since January that Iraq made progress.
This is what CNN said:
"Summary: On The Situation Room, John King failed to challenge Rep. Christopher Shays's claim that "since January," the Iraqi government "has done nothing." King did not mention the fact that Shays has, since January, touted "progress" in Iraq."

Shays to Maymin: You are right with your analysis of Iraqi constitution. But don't worry. We will stay in Iraq until they change it. Problem solved.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14570837/
O?DONNELL: Joining me now is Congressman Chris Shays, Republican from Connecticut, who has just returned from his 14th trip to Iraq. Congressman what did you learn in your latest visit?
REP. CHRIS SHAYS ?, CONNECTICUT: Well I learned what I suspected and that is that this new government really doesn?t have the will to do all the successful things that happened last year and part of the year before.
...O?DONNELL: But you are calling for a timetable, right.
SHAYS: Yes, but one more thing you will see the terrorists win and we can?t allow them to win. I?m calling for a timetable on three things. One, that they set provisional elections, that they have reconciliation and a timeline to do it, a timeline for finishing the constitution and give them the timeline on how long our troops will be there, doing the police work that ultimately we want them to do.
[He does not want to call it the deadline as Maymin does, but what it this if not deadline? ?give them the timeline on how long our troops will be there? ]
[Extremely interesting that after Maymin was the first to analyze Iraqi constitution and to prove that it is communist, Shays wants the Iraqi now to change (?finish?) constitution. While the American troops are still there. Obviously we can?t leave Iraq before they change the constitution to our liking.]
O?DONNELL: Congressman, with all due respect, while you say that you are not breaking with the president, you are calling for a timetable for withdrawal of U.S. troops and the president has said that that would be emboldening the terrorists. Republicans in your party have called people that are espousing your position now of being cut and runners, of wanting to throw in the towel. Why are your doing that now? Some may look at what you?re doing and saying it?s political expediency because you are facing a very tough re-election in Connecticut?
SHAYS: Well first off, taking this position doesn?t help me politically, but more importantly I want to make sure that you see the distinction. I agree with the president in our mission, I agree that we have got to succeed. The only difference and it?s a big difference, but it?s the one difference, and that is I think the way to get the Iraqis to wake up, to do the heavy lifting, is to let them know that we are not there indefinitely, that there?s not an open checkbook, that we?re not going take sustained losses indefinitely.
<Maymin: ?Well, they can do that anytime, two years from now, or twenty, or two hundred. Are we supposed to offer the Iraqis a blank check to come back and squash every civil war they have??>
O?DONNELL: Congressman let?s be clear because you have made your 14th trip to Iraq. You have fully supported everything that the president and the Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld have done in Iraq up until now. ... To be clear, what was it that the generals told you on the ground that has caused to you make this change in position?
SHAYS: ... But let me just be clear with you. I believe that we need to do something to motivate the Iraqis to do the things they did last year and the year before.
<Maymin: ?A deadline tells the Iraqi people that they have the support of the American military until that date to get their country in order. ?>

Also, Shays was in such a hurry to announce pull out from Iraq, that he did it on the foreign soil, not waiting until he comes back to America. Unforgivable sin for a member of the government, member of congress, the chairman of the arms committee. The only explanation for such a rush is that he wanted to be ?me, too? quickly after Phil called for Iraqi deadline.
